Crossing the Road – Kurt Ellis
Kurt Ellis discusses the storybook 'Crossing the Road' (Camera & Editing: Nicholas Boyd)
SECTION27 and Blind SA, in partnership with Nal’ iBali, will launch the storybook, ‘Crossing the Road’, on April 19, ahead of the World Book and Copyright Day which takes place on April 23.
The storybook, which is designed for primary school learners, is based on the incredible true story of Justice Zak Yacoob, a former Judge of the Constitutional Court of South Africa, who became permanently blind as a child. Authored by Kurt Ellis, the storybook describes Justice Yacoob’s challenges in accessing books in braille throughout his life, and how he was able to rise above these and eventually become a judge in the highest court of the land. It will be translated into 11 official languages, printed in braille and large print, and distributed to thousands of learners nationwide.
In 2022, Justice Yacoob supported Blind SA and SECTION27 in their fight before the Constitutional Court against the Copyright Act and the discriminatory effect it had on persons who are blind and visually impaired. The Court held in their favour, and declared the Copyright Act of 1978 unconstitutional as it limited access to works in accessible formats, such as braille or large print. The Court also granted an immediate exception to copyright for persons with disabilities, allowing them to convert works into accessible formats without first getting authorisation from the copyright holder.
The storybook will be launched in collaboration with learners from Sibonile School for the Blind.
