Critical minerals surge places infrastructure and energy at the centre of DRC’s mining future
As global demand accelerates, unlocking value in the DRC will depend on solving power, logistics and investment bottlenecks
As global demand for critical minerals continues to accelerate, the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) has become central to the future of energy transition supply chains. Producing over 70% of the world’s cobalt and rapidly expanding its copper output, the country is no longer just a source of raw materials it is increasingly a strategic hub for global industrial growth.
However, with this opportunity comes mounting pressure on infrastructure and energy systems. Power shortages, corridor inefficiencies and financing constraints remain key barriers to scaling production and enabling downstream beneficiation. Without coordinated investment and policy alignment, the pace of development risks falling behind global demand.
This shift is driving a stronger focus on integrated solutions linking mining operations to reliable energy supply, transport corridors and regional trade routes. Projects such as Inga III, alongside corridor development initiatives across the Copperbelt, are expected to play a pivotal role in unlocking long-term value.
At the same time, regulatory clarity and responsible sourcing frameworks are becoming increasingly important, particularly as international investors and offtakers seek greater transparency and stability in supply chains.
These challenges and the opportunities they present will be central to discussions at DRC Mining Week 2026, taking place from 17 to 19 June in Lubumbashi, with a dedicated pre-conference on 16 June focused on energy and infrastructure investment.
The event will bring together government, mining companies, investors and solution providers to engage on practical strategies for addressing bottlenecks, accelerating project development and strengthening the DRC’s position in the global critical minerals market.
As the country continues its shift from a local mining player to a globally significant critical minerals hub, the ability to align infrastructure, policy and investment will define the next phase of growth.
