Country, not individuals, must come first – Mbeki
In what seemed to be a veiled reference to President Jacob Zuma, former President Thabo Mbeki has said the country’s interests needed to come before those of an individual.
A national dialogue was needed to deal with the country’s problems. People needed to discuss what was wrong and where they wanted to be, he told reporters in Johannesburg on Monday.
"It's quite clear that there are many things that have not gone right," he said.
These included unemployment and poverty and the fact that the Constitutional Court had to give the nation a lesson on what was meant by constitutional democracy.
"This in my view is because there is this bigger issue of the future of the country and not the future of particular individuals," Mbeki said.
There has been a chorus of calls for Zuma to step down since the Constitutional Court’s judgment that Zuma violated the Constitution when he failed to comply with Public Protector Thuli Madonsela’s recommendations regarding the upgrades to his Nkandla homestead.
The calls have come from ANC stalwarts, former MK generals, civil society, and the general public.
Zuma apologised for what he said was the confusion and frustration the Nkandla saga had caused.
