Gold producer Caracal Gold says construction of a new heap leach plant at its Kilimapesa mine, in Kenya, remains on schedule.

The first 5 000 t a month pad for the heap leach operation has been completed and is being commissioned. This first heap leach pad will serve as a pilot plant for the proposed larger 20 000 t a month heap leach operation that Caracal intends to eventually develop.

"The commissioning of this new facility enables us to treat the 40 000 t of low-grade material stockpiled over the last few months and is another key milestone in the major expansion programme currently being implemented at our Kilimapesa Gold Mining and Processing Operations," comments Kilimapesa GM Riaan Lombard.

The heap leach plant will help Caracal increase the output of the mine to an eventual 24 000 oz/y.
