Luminaire manufacturer BEKA Schréder launched a high-performance light-emitting diode (LED) luminaire, the LEDbay-midi, late last year for industrial applications. The main objective was to enhance their low- and high-bay luminaire range. The company says that the luminaire has been very well received by warehouse facility managers, electrical contractors and logistics centre owners.

BEKA Schréder marketing manager Sibusiso Skosana notes that due to the wide photometric offering, the LEDbay-midi is suitable for lighting a range of industrial applications and spaces, using lower power consumption, compared with the traditional high-bay luminaires.

Product development manager Daniel Kasper explains that the LEDbay-midi has, in fact, been designed for applications which require mounting heights of between 6 m and 10 m.

“As such, the LEDbay-midi is better suited to small- to medium-sized workshops, gymnasia, factories, hangars, and warehouses, as well as packaging or minerals processing plants. “This is because these applications require very low glare and good distribution of light to ensure comfort for people working in the concerned environment.”

Kasper notes that the highly efficient and energy-saving luminaire was designed and manufactured locally making sure that it can withstand very harsh environments. The LEDbay-midi consumes up to 216 W with a maximum lumen output of 24 000 lumen in an ambient temperature of up to 35 °C, without reducing the useful lifetime of up to 100 000 hrs. “Performance tests show that the LEDbay-midi performs satisfactorily in all industrial environments, including environments with temperature ranges of –30 °C to +50 °C, and can withstand high-vibration environments.”

Further, Kasper emphasises that the luminaires require minimal maintenance and no lamp replacement for a minimum of ten years. This helps keep the maintenance costs low. The LEDbay range can be provided with an emergency functionality which has a battery backup to mitigate the effects of power outages, thereby increasing safety and ensuring a measure of productivity, depending on the application.

Skosana adds that the LEDbay-midi has various optical solutions and specialised light distribution options to ensure that it can be completely adaptive to customer requirements. Options include a polycarbonate diffuser for reduced glare, steel wire suspension for high applications and a standard 10 kV surge protection.

Ongoing Projects
Skosana notes that BEKA Schréder is involved in energy efficiency initiatives with various service station outlets. The company can supply multiple products for the perimeter, exterior and interior lighting of the service stations to minimise electricity consumption and better visibility of the station.

A recent study conducted by BEKA Schréder calculates savings achieved by replacing existing lighting with BEKA Schréder’s LED equivalents to increase safety, comfort and aesthetic appeal while reducing energy consumption, carbon emissions and total cost of ownership (TCO). Case studies show that implementing BEKA Schréder’s service station solution for under-canopy lighting can result in energy savings of 67% and TCO savings of up to R230 000 over ten years, with the service station experiencing return on investment (ROI) within two years.

In terms of perimeter lighting for the roads and parking, stations showed energy savings of 68%, with ROI in three months and a TCO saving of up R48 000 over ten years. Further, the revamped interior lighting resulted in energy savings of 48%, with ROI in about one-and-half years and a TCO saving of R356 883 over ten years.
