An ad hoc parliamentary committee was due to meet on Wednesday afternoon to shortlist ten candidates to succeed Public Protector Thuli Madonsela when her term ends in October.

Committee chairperson Makhosi Khoza, from the African National Congress, told MPs she wanted to complete that process during the course of the afternoon.

The committee decided in the morning that once the candidates appeared before it in August, they would be given 15 minutes to motivate why they were suitable for the post, and then face 45 minutes of questioning.

The committee then broke for two hours to allow all members to study public submission made on the process.

Corruption Watch has submitted a report to the committee after independently vetting the 62 nominees to determine their suitability to head the office, which has arguably become the chapter 9 institution with the highest public profile since Madonsela took up the post in 2009.

Madonsela and her deputy Kevin Malunga were among the candidates nominated directly by the public but the Constitution bars her from serving more than her current seven-year term.

The committee has until the end of August to report back to the National Assembly.
