Clanwilliam dam project office opens
Water and Sanitation Minister Nomvula Mokonyane at the weekend unveiled the Clanwilliam project management office (PMO) for the raising of the Clanwilliam dam wall.
The office would ensure that local people were afforded a chance to play a meaningful role in the value chain of the execution of the project, which would create sustainable development through socioeconomic spin-offs.
Mokonyane noted that the project would ensure that information about the raising of the dam wall was easily accessible by the residents who were beneficiaries of the project.
“Once operational, the PMO will serve as the anchor room for both communication and project management of the dam,” she said at the event.
Mokonyane hoped that the overall project empowered the local unemployed residents, entrepreneurs, emerging farmers and small businesses in the area through job creation and other income-earning opportunities.
“The recruitment of 360 local labourers will start soon and unemployed residents will be [provided] with work experience and other skills to equip them for further future employment, especially the youth,” she said.
The Clanwilliam dam wall, on the Olifants river, would be raised to allow additional volumes of water to be accumulated, meeting the full supply requirements for existing users.
It would also strengthen the dam in line with dam safety requirements.
