KOLKATA (miningweekly.com) – Indian major Coal India Limited (CIL) has invited sealed bids from international consultants to advise the miner on technology development and a modernisation programme.

According to CIL, the bids were sought from consultants which had responded to an earlier expression of interest floated by the coal miner.

The technology development and modernisation programme had been necessitated by the shortage of coal in the country, with an import dependency of some 135-million tonnes of coal during the last fiscal year, and an urgency to step up domestic production from existing and new mines.

As reported by Mining Weekly Online in February, the Coal Ministry had sought the appointment of international consultants with the mandate to identify technology and infrastructure development for mine planning, design and construction, keeping in view the production targets of the miner over the next 20 years.

Consultants would identify available indigenous technology and assess its suitability for bridging the technology gap, as well as its level of import dependency if it had to be sourced from overseas technology service providers.

The Ministry’s request was prompted by a Planning Commission report that showed coal demand growing at a compounded annual growth rate (CAGR) of 7.1% to 980-million tonnes by 2016. Against this, thermal coal imports were growing at a CAGR of 25%, indicating the country's domestic shortage of the energy raw material.
