JOHANNESBURG (miningweekly.com) – Third-quarter gold production at dual-listed Centamin’s Sukari gold mine, in Egypt, increased 39% year-on-year to 84 757 oz.

Production for the quarter was, however, down 9% from the 93 624 oz produced in the second quarter of the year.

Year-to-date production was recorded at 265 397 oz.

Sukari’s total openpit material movement for the third quarter decreased by 5% quarter-on-quarter, to 10.5-million tonnes, while openpit ore production increased by 15% to 3.4-million tonnes. This resulted in an increase in the run-of-mine stockpile balance of 346 000 t to 1.54-million tonnes at September 30.

The underground mine delivered 152 000 t of ore, a 7% increase on that delivered in the second quarter.

Further, quarterly throughput at the Sukari process plant amounted to a record 1.46-million tons, a 46% increase on the corresponding period in the previous year, and a 3% increase on that of the second quarter of this year, exceeding the nameplate annualised rate of five-million tonnes for the third successive quarter with continued high levels of productivity and availability.

"The third quarter saw another strong performance on several fronts, most notably a further increase in both tonnes mined from underground and total process plant throughput,” Centamin chairperson Josef El-Raghy commented.

He added that while Centamin expected some impact on plant throughput in the fourth quarter, as a result of the start of the mine’s Stage 4 commissioning activities, Centamin was now well placed to exceed its initial full year 2013 guidance of 320 000 oz.
