Project description
The Capanda dam is 110 m high and 1 470 m long, forming a 170 km2 reservoir.

The Capanda hydropower project, is the largest-ever civil construction project in Angola, will involve the construction of four 130-MW turbines in two phases.

The first phase was launched in June 2004 and involved the construction of two 130-MW turbines. The second phase will bring the total power generating capacity of the dam to 520 MW. Work on the second phase is well under way and will include the installation of the last two turbines and other services required to assemble the two units.

To date, an estimated $4-billion has been invested in the project.

It is anticipated that the project will be completed by July 2007.
