Schneider Electric, a global specialist in energy management, has introduced Canalis KT, designed for transporting and distributing electrical power, from 800 to 4,000A for aluminium conductors and 1,000 to 5,000A for copper conductors.

According to the Jaque Mare, product manager for Installation Systems at Schneider Electric South Africa, Canalis KT’s high degree of protection protects it against water projections, sprinklers and dust. “Its compact design and robustness (IK08) mean it can be used in industrial applications, shopping centres, tertiary buildings and infrastructures,” he says.

The company rates Canalis KT as an ideal solution for customers who are looking for proven reliability and a high level of protection for all their building power distribution requirements. “It is compact and sturdy, with a high safety rating and is extremely versatile and suitable for all types of buildings: industrial, tertiary, commercial, infrastructures and more,” says Mare.

He emphasises that Canalis KT is a modular system that can be adapted to meet the changing needs of the building in terms of reorganisation, expansion and power requirements. “Upgrades are quick and easy to implement. That is, a tap-off unit can be added, replaced or relocated while the system is live. Such modifications are, in fact, still inexpensive, due to line proximity, tap-off point always available and fast response times,” he adds.

The Canalis range also offers customers all the software tools they need to design, quote and develop their projects. “ Of course, our specialists and distribution/ production centres areavailable to provide you with technical assistance throughout the implementation period of your projects. They guarantee fast response and a high-quality installation,” states Mare. “With Canalis KT, safety and continuity of service go hand in hand.”

This means that maintenance or upgrade work can be carried out without shutting down the installation. Also, live parts are inaccessible and a foolproof system prevents dismantling errors and prevents the connection or withdrawal of a connector under load. In addition, the busbar trunking provides immediate readability of the electrical circuit and enables fast intervention on the areas concerned.

“Benefits of Canalis KT are certainly its compactness, operating continuity, upgradeability, water-resistance (sprinkler), the fact that it is halogen-free and fire resistant, as well as offers network readability, low voltage drops, low electromagnetic emissions and high tap-off density,” lists Mare. “An added bonus is that it is all made from recyclable equipment and the principle of a prefabricated solution and the service life of our products mean that they can easily be dismantled, cleaned and reused.”

When it comes to installation, Canalis KT can be fitted everywhere both horizontally and vertically. This is especially pertinent when space is an issue and safety paramount. In pipe ducts, wherespace is often limited, the compactness of the Canalis KT system saves a considerable amount of space with respect to a conventional cable installation. The rising main sections have three tap-off points per floor to meet all installation configuration requirements and to facilitate future upgrades.

“Canalis is part of a comprehensive range of products that is perfectly coordinated to meet all medium- and low-voltage electrical distribution requirements. All these products have been designed to work together and are electrically, mechanically and communicatively compatible.

“The electrical installation is therefore both optimised and more efficient, resulting in better continuityof service, increased safety for persons and equipment, guaranteed upgradeability, and efficient monitoring and control,” concludes Mare.
