Canadian Chrome Company, formerly KWG Resources, signed a supplementary agreement that will allow contractors working for two First Nations to conduct geotechnical investigations along part of the planned Northern Road Link, a key infrastructure project tied to Ontario’s Ring of Fire mining district.

The company’s subsidiary, Canada Chrome, granted AtkinsRéalis temporary access to sections of its mineral exploration claims for up to a year, covering 13 borehole locations for soil testing and aggregate studies, the company said in a statement Thursday.

The work, expected to run from mid-September through late November, is being done on behalf of the Marten Falls and Webequie First Nations, which are leading the road’s environmental assessment.

The Northern Road Link would connect the proposed Marten Falls Community Access Road with the Webequie Supply Road, creating an all-season transportation corridor into the James Bay Lowlands. That region hosts the Ring of Fire, a mineral-rich area in northern Ontario that has long been touted as one of Canada’s most significant undeveloped mining districts.

Ontario’s Ring of Fire has been stalled for more than a decade due to permitting delays, infrastructure costs, and Indigenous concerns. Premier Doug Ford’s government has pledged billions for roadbuilding to unlock deposits of chromite, nickel and other critical minerals.

AtkinsRéalis, formerly SNC-Lavalin, will share results of the field studies with Canadian Chrome. The company said the data would help guide its own exploration and development planning in the area, where it held the Black Horse chromite discovery and envisions a 330-km utility corridor linking mines to Nakina and to regional First Nations communities.
