Business calls on ANC to restore confidence in Office of the President
Business Leadership South Africa (BLSA) has called on the ruling African National Congress (ANC) to “act quickly and decisively” to restore confidence in the Office of the President.
This came ahead of a meeting of the ANC’s 100-or-so strong National Executive Committee this weekend.
“The ANC, as ruling party, has a responsibility to refute the claims of Deputy Finance Minister Mcebisi Jonas of offers of Cabinet appointments, together with others who have made similar claims. If these claims cannot be refuted then steps must be taken against those who have made such offers possible,” BLSA said in a statement.
Business Unity South Africa (Busa), meanwhile, said the allegations “severely undermined” business and investor confidence and called on government to take “decisive action” to support the measures outlined by Finance Minister Pravin Gordhan in his 2016 Budget speech, to ensure the country avoided a ratings downgrade.
“A stable political environment is of critical importance in underpinning growth and development. Busa calls on government and all South Africans to demonstrate continued and renewed respect for our hard won constitutional democracy.
“Going forward, business stands ready to play its part in building a prosperous future in partnership with government and other stakeholders. To achieve this, we believe that the goal of maximising inclusive economic growth should be paramount,” Busa stated.
