BREST-300 fast reactor project, Russia
Name and Location
BREST-300 fast reactor project, Russia.
Client
Rosatom.
Project Description
The project involves the construction of a demonstration BREST-300 unit and the manufacturing facility for the dense nitride uranium-plutonium fuel that the reactor will need at the Siberian Chemical Combine (SCC), in Russia.
BREST refers to bystry reaktor so svintsovym teplonositelem, which is Russian for ‘fast reactor with lead coolant’. The reactor’s core will measure about 2.3 m in diameter, 1.1 m in height and contain 16 t of fuel. The unit will be refuelled every year, with each fuel element being kept in the core for five years.
Value
The overall project is expected to cost about $3-billion.
Duration
The BREST-300 reactor is scheduled to start up in 2020.
Latest Developments
Construction has started on a pilot plant for the production of fuel for the experimental lead-cooled BREST-300 fast reactor.
The plant is scheduled to begin operations in 2017, in time to produce the first fuel load for the BREST-300 reactor.
Construction of the reactor is set to begin in 2016. A reprocessing facility is expected to come on line at the SCC in 2022, closing the fuel-cycle loop for the reactor.
