Project Description
The Boreas intertie project is being developed to provide an outlet for new renewable-energy generation and improve power system operation in Montana and the northern Rocky Mountain region.

The first leg will comprise 523 km, 500 kV ac line running from Colstrip, in Montana, to the Medicine Bow, in Wyoming, connecting to the northern terminus of the

TransWest Express transmission project. The second leg includes a new 230 kV interconnection and transmission system between Fort Peck and Colstrip, in Montana. The line will start out as a single-circuit 230 kV line running 177 km from Fort Peck to Circle and continue south as a double-circuit 230 kV line terminating at Colstrip. The third leg will consist of a new 684 km 500 kV high-voltage direct current transmission line running from Colstrip, in Montana, to Bismarck, in North Dakota.
