Automotive multinational BMW Group South Africa (BMW SA) has handed over a 150-bed overflow facility, at Bronkhorstspruit Hospital.

The facility forms part of a long-term and sustainable R76-million investment in creating more than 800 beds in nine hospitals and four community health clinics, including Phedisong, the Soshanguve Multi-Purpose Centre, Kgabo CHC and KT Motubatse, as well as two Covid-19 screening and testing centres, the company says.

The investment in Bronkhorstspruit is the largest project. It was built from scratch, furnished and prepared to be operationally ready with a 150-bed capacity structure, and aims to foster pandemic preparedness at community level.

The May 6 handover was attended by Gauteng Premier David Makhura, Gauteng Health MEC Dr Nomathemba Mokgethi and German Ambassador to South Africa Dr Martin Schäfer.

BMW SA also donated an ambulance, which is in full operation, as well as three Rosslyn-built BMW X3s.

These first responder vehicles are serving the Ga-Rankuwa, Mabopane and Soshanguve areas.

“I would like to thank the Gauteng Department of Health, the South African government and the German government. Without their cooperation, continuous collaboration and hard work, we would not have been able to achieve what we have,” said BMW SA and sub-Saharan Africa CEO Peter van Binsbergen.
