With a focus on strengthening the efficiency and reach of its parts distribution network across South Africa, BMW Group South Africa’s regional distribution centre (RDC), in Midrand, Gauteng, is a critical component of the group’s after-sales network.

Through a centralised logistics approach, the RDC supports the consistent availability of Genuine BMW and Mini parts to enable a reliable aftersales experience for customers nationwide.

Launched in 2018 with project developer Attacq, the 32 000 m2 facility serves as a central hub for storing and managing BMW, BMW Motorrad and MINI parts.

It supplies parts to authorised retailers, supports after-sales operations and plays a role in maintaining quality assurance through controlled handling and tracking processes.

In total, the facility supports more than 70 BMW, MINI and BMW Motorrad retailers nationwide.

It handles and distributes, on average, more than 3.8-million parts a year. In addition, the RDC executes multiple metro, regional, cross-border and line-haul deliveries every day.

“A centralised, integrated approach to logistics enables us to deliver on a national scale and adapt and optimise our operations based on performance and market conditions.

“It also embodies our commitment to reliability, accuracy and long-term service quality, culminating in an enhanced service delivery across our retail network and a refined customer experience,” said BMW Group South Africa customer support GM Rob Gearing in a media release.

According to the company, the facility is constantly evolving through expansion initiatives, improvements in its logistical capabilities and key investments in infrastructure and systems.

During a media engagement event held at the facility on July 1, Gearing explained that the company had extended its lease until 2035, noting that the facility could be expanded by 7 000 m2 if additional space was required.

He pointed out that total stock value held at the facility amounted to about R660-million, with about 70 000 parts numbers. The facility also has the capacity to hold about 19 000 tyres, with about 10 000 tyres held currently.

Gearing also highlighted BMW’s Proactive Care service for its vehicles where the car alerts the customer to upcoming services or potential issues, emphasising the importance of safety and trust for the customer.
