JOHANNESBURG (miningweekly.com) – Gold production at Caledonia Mining’s 49%-owned Blanket mine, in Zimbabwe, decreased by 2.7% year-on-year to 9 960 oz for the three months to March 31.

Output for the quarter was also 4.4% lower than the 10 417 oz produced in the December quarter.

Caledonia CEO Steve Curtis noted that production for the quarter had been higher than 98% of the targeted production.

Further, production tended to be lower in the first quarter of every year, owing to the number of public holidays in those three months.

“It is anticipated that production will increase somewhat in the second half of 2015 after the tramming loop on 22 Level has been completed, which will increase the underground haulage capacity.

“The tramming loop is on schedule for completion by the end of June. The No 6 Winze is now 900 m below surface as at April 8 and is still on track to be completed by the end of July. The presink at Central shaft has commenced,” Curtis highlighted.

Caledonia expected to produced 42 000 oz of gold this year.

Meanwhile, gold sales for the three months to March 31, at 10 770 oz, were 12.1% higher than sales in the December quarter and 11.8% higher than sales in the March 2014 quarter.
