PERTH (miningweekly.com) – ASX-listed Blackearth and its joint venture (JV) partners have acquired a site in the Pune region of India where they will develop a downstream graphite processing plant.

The JV’s plan is to develop a plant that can produce 2 000 t/y to 2 500 t/y of expandable graphite during its initial stages, and could then expand production capacity to 4 000 t/y to 5 000 t/y.

The cost of the development, including land, building and all capital cost is scheduled to be at around $3-million for the Stage 1 development, with gross revenue projected to be $7-million in the first full year of production, growing to $18-million to $20.5-million a year following plant expansion.

Graphite concentrate for the operation would be sourced from third parties for the first two years of the operation, with product from Blackearth’s Maniry graphite project, in Madagascar, to supply the operations from the third year onwards.

The downstream operation is expected to have an operating life of 25 years, with a feasibility study estimating an aftertax net present value of $38.9-million and an aftertax internal rate of return of 571%.

Blackearth is planning to start the supply of expandable graphite in the second quarter of 2023, and the JV partners have secured a binding offtake agreement to supply all the initial production to global graphite downstream processor Grafitbergbau.
