Biological wastewater treatment facilities, Russia
Name and Location
Biological wastewater treatment facilities, Russia.
Client
Gazprom Neft.
Project Description
The project involves the construction of new biological wastewater treatment facilities at the Gazprom Neft Moscow refinery.
These new facilities mark the second stage in the development of a comprehensive treatment complex at the refinery. The first stage involved the replacement of older open-type treatment facilities, which were brought into production in 2012 and that have reduced emissions by more than 90%. The replacement also resulted in a six-fold reduction in emissions of oil content into effluent. The new biological treatment facilities have a total capacity of 1 400 m3/h across two zones, the first covering 6 400 m2 and the second 18 000 m2.
The new biological wastewater treatment plants will be built on the former buffer zone, decommissioned in 2012.
The refinery will use a technology unique to Russia, which involves a final cleaning of wastewater, allowing for the removal of 98% of pollutants. The processing chain at the wastewater treatment facilities will include membrane bioreactor units, two-stage flotation, carbon filters, dehydration of activated sludge and oil sludge, and reverse osmosis. The purification of almost 100% of industrial effluents from the refinery will now become possible using activated sludge in combination with mechanical filtration through a membrane bioreactor.
Activated sludge contains various microorganisms that act as a culture for the purification of various refining side-products, including nitrogen and other potentially harmful substances. The abundance of such microorganisms in the activated sludge results in the assimilation of such contaminants. Biological catalysts within the activated sludge cause biochemical reactions leading to the conversion of various particles within it into nonhazardous materials.
