The Cape of Good Hope Building Industry Bargaining Council (BIBC) has paid record leave and bonus wages to employees in excess of R161-million for this year, 23% higher than the previous year’s R131-million.

This followed a 31% increase in industry compliance. “The council’s increased focus on compliance, specifically by increasing the number of compliance agents to conduct site inspections, has had the biggest impact on the increase in the yearly payout,” said BIBC secretary Ronel Sheehan.

The number of employers contributing to the funds increased by almost 50%, from 2 286 employers to 3 375 and the number of employees receiving benefits increased by 31% during the 2015 benefit year. This translated into more than 10 000 additional employees receiving their leave pay and bonus from the BIBC this year.

In total, more than 47 000 employees would be paid out by the BIBC.

The leave and bonus funds were paid over to the industry employees in December.
