PERTH (miningweekly.com) – Mining giant BHP Billiton has warned that nickel production for its December quarter would be affected, as underground operations at its Perseverance mine, in Western Australia, remained suspended following a seismic event at the end of last month.

Nine workers were rescued from the Nickel West Leinster operation on October 31, after they were trapped underground following the seismic event.

Underground operations were temporarily suspended, with the miner saying on Wednesday that only a small crew of employees were able to safely continue working underground to re-establish access and carry out inspections and assessments, as well as maintenance of essential services.

The remainder of the underground personnel have been informed that they would not be required to work until further notice.

The miner pointed out that the other Nickel West operations at Mount Keith, Cliffs, Kalgoorlie, Kambalda and Kwinana were not affected by the seismic event, and were currently operating as normal.

However, while the Kwinana nickel refinery production would be maintained in the short term, the temporary suspension of the Perseverance underground mine would result in a reduction in the total saleable nickel from the Nickel West operation during the current quarter.

The impact on production would only be revealed in the company’s quarterly operational review.
