PERTH (miningweekly.com) – Mining giant BHP Billiton has shipped its one-billionth tonne of iron-ore from its Pilbara operations to customers in Japan.

The company’s iron-ore president, Jimmy Wilson, noted that the company shipped its first iron-ore product to Japan in 1966, and was proud of the nation-building role it had played since that time.

“We also owe much to Japan for their role in growing the iron-ore industry in the Pilbara. Our joint venture participants Itochu and Mitsui contributed capital, and as trading companies they were all a key link to the Japanese markets.”

BHP has invested some $24-billion into its Western Australian mines, rail and port infrastructure, and Wilson said that as the company entered its next phase of growth, it would look to improve its productivity, optimising its installed capacity and working its assets harder and smarter to deliver to customer expectations.

The diversified miner currently produces in excess of 220-million tonnes a year of iron-ore from its Western Australian assets, and would increase this capacity to 270-million tonnes by the expansion of its Jimblebar mine capacity to 55-million tonnes a year and through the broader debottlenecking of its supply chain.
