Beles hydropower project, Ethiopia.

Project description
The project will involve the construction of a hydroelectric power station over the Beles river, in the Benishangul Gumuz state.

The plant is expected to generate more than 460 MW of electricity. The project also includes smaller irrigation and drinking water projects.

Beles will be the largest hydropower station in Ethiopia.

Value
The project is expected to cost six-billion birr.

Duration
Commercial operation of the project is expected to start in 2008.

Breakdown of main contracts
The scope of supply for the project includes model test, design, manufacturing, transport, installation and commissioning of the complete electrochemical equipment, including four vertical Francis turbines, digital-type governors, generators, and the electrical and mechanical balance of the plant.

Client
Ethiopian Electric Power Corporation (Eepco).

Latest developments
VA Tech Hydro has signed an $89,5-million supply contract for the project. Apart from designing, supplying and installing the four turbines at the underground site, the company will supply all other electro mechanical infrastructure required. The order was placed by Salini Costruttori, which is the turnkey supplier of the plant.
