Since the Zuma presidency weakened crime intelligence, violent crime surged, with murder rates rising over 75%.

South Africa faces severe femicide, and most murderers evade justice. Prisons fail by perpetuating crime; harsher sentences do not help. Edwin Cameron, after visiting prisons, advocates for reform.

Along with colleagues, he suggests abolishing minimum sentences, cash bail, and decriminalising drug use to improve safety and justice.

ABOUT THE AUTHORS

Edwin Cameron has been a Justice of South Africa’s highest court, the Constitutional Court, since 1 January 2009.

Rebecca Gore is a Research Associate at the Centre for Law and Society. Rebecca was the legal researcher for the Inspecting Judge of the Judicial Inspectorate for Correctional Services, Justice Cameron, and a law clerk at the Constitutional Court.

Sohela Surajpal is a legal researcher at South Africa's prisons' oversight body, the Judicial Inspectorate for Correctional Services.
