BEE newcomer wins energy innovation recognition
A black economic-empowerment (BEE) newcomer to the local bottled-gas market, KayaGas, has been honoured by the South African National Energy Association (Sanea) with the Sanea Energy Project Award for its significant contribution to the energy environment.
The award was presented to the company, in August, at a ceremony in Johannesburg.
KayaGas has become known for its inno-vative safety approach to liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) distribution in informal settlements and has taken legal action against established LPG distributors that are trying to prevent it from trading.
This innovative approach to business and the company’s attempts to bring cheaper, safer and cleaner energy to the poor is the prime reason for KayaGas having received the Sanea award.
The criteria for the award were leadership, innovation, being a role model, having vision- ary qualities, attracting internationalrecogni- tion and having an impact on South Africa.
“We have overcome many challenges in providing clean, safe and affordable energy to the lowest-income homes. Also, our LPG cylinder, with a pressure valve that prevents it from exploding when engulfed by fire, is a safety feature that is currently incorporated in the national standards,” says KayaGas MD George Tatham.
KayaGas’s distribution system is unique in that it produces 5 kg cylinders containing LPG gas, which is available in informal settlements so that householders do not have to travel more than 500 m to buy gas.
Further, its appliances are sold at a signifi-cantly lower cost, compared with others in the market, and its products reach 150 000 low-income homes in Cape Town.
