A move to the use of battery-powered machinery in the agricultural sector is said to be the result of a greater emphasis on sustainable agriculture, as well as a rise in female farmers leading to a need for more flexible and lighter equipment.

Husqvarna asserts that three of its products, namely chainsaws, brush-cutters and pole saws, are particularly suited for use by women farmers. The advent of new technology has made these tools lighter and easier to manage effectively, says Husqvarna go-to-market manager Jenna Robinson.

Battery-operated machinery offers a number of benefits, including:  

• Lighter and simpler: battery-powered versions are up to 40% lighter in weight than petrol-powered tools and are less complex to operate, allowing for use across multiple tasks.
• Lower operating costs: while the purchasing cost of a battery-powered machine may be greater, saving in operating expenses ensures long-term cost-savings.
• Minimising theft: fuel-operated machinery has the added risk of fuel supplies being targets of theft - this risk is eliminated for battery-powered tools and the equipment itself can also be safeguarded by keeping chargers separate from the tools.
• Fewer repairs: Petrol-operated machines require a special mix of two-stroke oil with petrol and engines can be damaged if the mix is not used or if the incorrect ratio is used.  A simple battery change reduces the risk of damage and repairs.
• Increased productivity: Using lighter machines that vibrate less, helps reduce operator fatigue and increases productivity.
• Environment-friendly: battery-operated machines do not require the use of fossil fuels or emit harmful fumes. They are also quieter which reduces the risk of hearing damage over extended periods of use.
• Cleaner: refuelling of petrol equipment can result in spillage and mess, which is eliminated in battery-operated machinery.

“Early adopters of battery-powered equipment are already reaping the benefits and singing its praises,” concludes Robinson.
