KALGOORLIE (miningweekly.com) – ASX-listed developer Bathurst Resources has received the nod from the New Zealand Environmental Court to develop its Escarpment mine project, subject to minor consent conditions.

The Escarpment project forms part of the greater Buller coal project and was expected to add some 225 direct jobs and around 800 indirect jobs to the region, as well as NZ$45-million a year in royalties and taxes from a production base of one-million tons of coal a year.

In May, Bathurst was granted an access arrangement for the Escarpment project by the Conservation Minister, as part of the plateau on which the project is located had high conservation values.

Bathurst said on Thursday that the Environmental Court had requested minor amendments to a limited number of proposed consent conditions.

“We consider that these amendments will not be difficult to address, as the amendments relate mainly to the wording of the conditions addressing rehabilitation and the requirements in respect of the proposed Denniston Permanent Protection Area,” Bathurst MD Hamish Bohannan said.

The company was also required to use “best endeavours” to achieve an appropriate protection mechanism for the area.

Bohannan said the company was delighted with the positive court decision.

“The court has also acknowledged the urgency of the matter by requesting that parties provide a prompt response on conditions. We expect to receive consent as soon as the court has had time to consider that further information.”
