Name of the Project
Basra refinery upgrade project.

Project Description
Although Iraq is one of the world's leading oil-producing countries, the two refineries currently in operation, which were built in the 1970s, are experiencing a decline in production capacity as a result of war and lack of maintenance.

Unable to meet domestic demand for petroleum products, Iraq has to import petroleum products such as gasoline.

The upgrade of the Basra refinery includes the construction of a 34 500 bbl/d fluid catalytic cracking unit, a vacuum distillation unit and a 40 000 bb/d diesel desulphurisation unit.

Potential Job Creation
More than 2 000 operating personnel jobs will be created after the project's completion.

The project is estimated at $3.82-billion.

Planned Start/End Date
The project is scheduled for completion for 2025.
