JSE-listed construction and engineering group Basil Read has been awarded two contracts for additional work on the St Helena Airport project.

The first contract, valued at R244-million, would entail the design and construction of a permanent wharf in Rupert’s Bay, which would be part of the overall airport project.

The second contract would entail the construction of the Horsepoint landfill site, with the contract valued at R14-million.

The additional works would be carried out within the existing contract period and were expected to be completed by early 2015.

Basil Read was, in 2011, awarded the contract to design, build and operate the airport.

The two-phase airport project, which is being undertaken for the St Helena government and funded by the British government’s Department for International Development, was valued at £250-million.

The additional contracts, along with some additional variations, would bring the total value of the St Helena Airport project to about £265-million for phases 1 and 2.

“We are extremely pleased to have secured these additional contracts, especially since Basil Read is already active in the construction of the airport on St Helena Island. Enormous progress has been made in the past two years on Phase 1 in terms of the airport and preparations in general across St Helena,” commented Basil Read CEO Marius Heyns.
