PERTH (miningweekly.com) - Coal developer Bandanna Energy has released its environmental-impact statement (EIS) for the Springsure Creek coal project, in Queensland, for public review, following state approval.

MD Michael Gray said on Thursday that the EIS process was a critically important stage in the approvals process for the Springsure Creek mine.

A capital investment of some A$743-million would be required for the Stage 1 development of the Springsure project, which would deliver some 5.5-million tons a year of coal.

The second stage of the operation, which would increase production to 11-million tons a year, would require an additional capital investment of A$437-million.

“Bandanna Energy is uniquely positioned to become Australia’s next coal producer. With extensive coal resources in the Galilee and Bowen basins in close proximity to existing rail infrastructure, and with its shareholding in Stage 1 of the Wiggins Island Coal Export Terminal, which is currently under construction, Bandanna is poised to undergo substantial growth,” said Gray.

Construction of the first longwall was expected to take some two years to complete, with the second longwall construction slated to start in 2020. Once fully operation, the mine would employ some 585 people.

Separate approvals would be sought for both the transport and infrastructure corridor connecting the proposed Springsure Creek coal mine, the rail loading facility and the 300-bed workforce accommodation village.

The EIS would be available for public comment until March 27.
