Employment levels in South Africa’s new-vehicle manufacturing industry reached its highest level in four years, says the National Association of Auto- mobile Manufacturers of South Africa (Naamsa).

At the end of March, employment increased by 140 jobs to reach 30 299 positions, notes Naamsa in its 2013 first-quarter industry review. This increase came on top of the 780 new jobs created during the fourth quarter of 2012.

The average monthly industry employment number at new-vehicle plants for 2012 was 29 180, compared with 28 292 in 2011.

Naamsa says employment levels are expected to increase further, as a number of vehicle manufacturers ramp up production for export markets.

The association also notes that industry capital expenditure remains close to record levels, and is projected to exceed R5.2-billion in 2013, compared with R4.67-billion in 2012.

First-quarter vehicle sales in South Africa were equally healthy, with new-car sales up 3% on the first three months of 2012, light commercial vehicles up 8.1%, medium trucks up 6.1% and heavy trucks down 1.1%.

Domestic new-vehicle sales are expected to grow by up to 7% in 2013, to 652 000 units.

Naamsa expects 2013 local vehicle production to grow 18% to about 640 000 units in 2013.

Exports are forecast to reach 361 000 vehicles, compared with 277 893 vehicles in 2012.
