Australian High Commissioner to S Africa dies
JOHANNESBURG (miningweekly.com) – South African President Jacob Zuma on Wednesday sent condolences to the government of Australia, following the passing of the Australian High Commissioner to South Africa, Graeme Wilson.
Wilson died in his home in Pretoria on Tuesday after a short illness.
“High Commissioner Wilson was a remarkable person, a true gentleman and ambassador for his country. He left no stone unturned to strengthen relations between South Africa and Australia and will always be remembered for the passion he had for Africa and, in particular, South Africa, the country where he was the resident High Commissioner since January 2013.
“In this time of mourning, our thoughts are with the family of High Commissioner Wilson. We wish the family strength during this difficult time. He will be sorely missed,” Zuma said in a statement.
Wilson was a senior career officer with the Australian Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade. According to the department’s website, he previously served as special coordinator of the regional assistance mission to Solomon Islands, Ambassador to Mexico and Consul-General in New Caledonia. He had also held earlier postings in France and Vanuatu and was a former Chief of Protocol.
Wilson held a Master of Arts in French from the University of Melbourne, a Bachelor of Arts (Honours) from the University of Melbourne and a Master of Arts in International Relations from the University of Southern California.
