Atlantis Special Economic Zone (ASEZ) for green technologies.

Location
On the west coast of South Africa, 40 km from Cape Town, in the Western Cape.

Project Owner/s
Wesgro.

Project Description
The ASEZ aims to capitalise on the Western Cape’s booming renewable-energy and green technology sector. This includes wind turbines, solar panels, insulation, biofuels, electric vehicles, materials recycling and green building materials.

An SEZ is a geographically designated area set aside for targeted economic activities, supported through special arrangements, including legislation, and systems that may differ from those that apply in the rest of South Africa.

Potential Job Creation
The SEZ is expected to create 1 200 direct jobs by 2022 and 3 000 jobs by 2030.

Capital Expenditure
The ASEZ is expected to attract about R3.7-billion in investment over the next 20 years.

Planned Start/End Date
Atlantis was designated by the Department of Trade and Industry as an SEZ in October 2018. In December 2018, President Cyril Ramaphosa officially launched the project.

Latest Developments
The Western Cape Cabinet approved key amendments to the founding documents of the ASEZ Co in December 2020, which allows for the buying of land on which the ASEZ Co is located from the City of Cape Town in exchange for a minority shareholding in the ASEZ Co.

Key Contracts, Suppliers and Consultants
None stated.
