KOLKATA (miningweekly.com) - At least three people were feared dead while illegally mining for coal in abandoned mines at Dhanbad, in the eastern Indian province of Jharkhand.

Police said there were fears of more people either trapped or killed after water flooded the mines on Sunday morning, when local villagers where extracting coal illegally from mines that had been operated by Eastern Coalfields Limited, a wholly owned subsidiary of Coal India Limited (CIL).

According to a statement issued by the police, local authorities were using pumps and generators to remove water from the mines while conducting surveys in villages in the region to ascertain whether more missing people may be trapped in the mines.

The Dhanbad region has around 66 coal mines and, according to a report of a private management institute, more than 50 000 locals were engaged in illegal coal mining from abandoned mines controlled by local mafia, generating estimated business of between $100-million and $110-million a year.

The Dhanbad tragedy comes close on the heels of at least 14 people killed on Saturday at Sundargarh coal mines in the eastern Indian province of Odisha. The operations are owned by Mahanadi Coalfields, another wholly owned subsidiary of CIL.

The deaths were caused by the collapse of a coal dump from heavy rains while local villagers where illegally collecting coal from overburdens of the mines.
