Arup has two of its women engineers in the six finalists of the Transport Personality of the Year, which is part of the Africa Transport 2014 Awards held on 1 July 2104. The winner was Salome van Rhyn, an Associate at Arup.
The award evening is a highlight of the transport agenda and forms part of the annual two-day Africa Rail, Ports and Harbours, Aviation and Cargo exhibition and conference, held in Johannesburg.
Van Rhyn won the award from an impressive shortlist of:
• Aboubaker Omar Hadi -Djibouti Ports & Free Zone Authority
• Brian Molefe -Transnet
• Kriba Naiken - Quattro Freight
• Madeleen Engelbrecht - Arup
• Siyabonga Gama - Transnet Freight Rail
Richly deserving, van Rhyn has had a stellar career in rail, initially working at Transnet in asset protection services and infrastructure maintenance before moving to Arup. Her contribution to the transport sector continues with her ongoing role on the Independent Certifier team for the Gautrain project.
