Name and Location
Arinaga Quay offshore wind project, Canary Islands, Spain.

Client
Gamesa.

Project Description
The project involves the construction of Spain’s first offshore wind power project at the Arinaga Quay, in the Canary Islands.

The offshore system will have a 5 MW capacity.

This offshore system, with a rotor diameter of 128 m and a modular, redundant design, ensures reliability and maximises energy output.

The offshore turbine is equipped with the proved and validated technology of Gamesa’s 4.5 MW system, plus the know-how and experience acquired during the 4.5 MW system’s roll-out.

In addition to the offshore system, Gamesa plans to develop higher-capacity offshore turbines of between 7 MW and 8 MW in the medium to long term.

Value
Not stated.

Duration
Gamesa expects the turbine to begin operating in the third quarter of 2013 and aims to secure certification thereafter.

Latest Developments
The components for the 5 MW marine turbine have been shipped from the port of Bilbao to the Canary Islands, Spain.

The blades, manufactured at a Gamesa plant in Aoiz (Navarre), each span 62.5 m and weigh 15 t.

They are the largest turbine blades ever produced and transported in Spain and are among the largest ever manufactured in Europe.

The nacelle, manufactured at the Tauste factory, Zaragoza, is 12.5 m long, 4 m tall and wide and weighs 72 t.

Meanwhile, the tower of almost 90 m was manufactured by Windar, a joint venture between Gamesa and Daniel Alonso.

Key Contracts and Suppliers
Gamesa and Daniel Alonso (tower).

On Budget and on Time?
