Trade union, the Association of Mineworkers and Construction Union (AMCU) has referred the current wage negotiation process for dual-listed Sibanye-Stillwater’s Rustenburg and Marikana platinum group metals (PGMs) operations to the Commission for Conciliation, Mediation and Arbitration (CCMA) for conciliation.

In a statement on Tuesday, Sibanye said this was another stage in the negotiation process and followed the internal resolution processes.

Sibanye, however, added that it “continues to engage constructively” with AMCU in an attempt to conclude a fair and sustainable wage agreement.

AMCU and other unions are in negotiations with various PGM mining companies in South Africa.

On Tuesday, AMCU said it was "making good progress" in its negotiations with Anglo American Platinum and Impala Platinum, which have both crossed the R1 000 mark, but lamented that Sibanye "remains a stumbling block".

AMCU previously announced, in June, that it was seeking a R17 000 living wage for workers.
