Al Taweelah independent water project, Saudi Arabia – update
Name of the Project
Al Taweelah independent water project (IWP).
Location
Taweelah Power and Water Complex, 50 km north of Abu Dhabi, in the United Arab Emirates.

Emirates Water and Electricity Company (EWEC).
Project Description
Taweelah will be the world’s largest seawater reverse osmosis desalination plant and the first standalone independent water project in Abu Dhabi.
Al Taweelah uses low-carbon-intensive reverse osmosis technology and is partially powered by solar energy, which is expected to account for at least 30% of the project’s electricity capacity within eight years, with a target of raising this figure to 55% by the end of the first quarter-life of the project.
The plant is expected to deliver 909 200 m3/d of water to support the industries and the community at Al Taweelah and the surrounding areas.
The plant will also play a role in catering to Abu Dhabi’s peak water demand, which is expected to increase by 11% between 2017 and 2024.
