Name of the Project
Al Kharsaah solar photovoltaic (PV) independent power producer (IPP) project.
Location
About 80 km west of Doha, Qatar.
Project Owner/s
The project will be developed and operated by Siraj 1 SPV, jointly owned by a consortium comprising Total Solar International and Marubeni (40%) and Siraj Energy (60%), a joint venture between Qatar Petroleum (40%) and Qatar Electricity & Water Company (60%).
Project Description
Al Kharsaah, with 800 MWp installed solar capacity, is Qatar’s first large-scale solar power plant in Qatar.
The plant has been built on more than 1 000 ha – equivalent to about 1400 football pitches – and is equipped with two-million bifacial solar modules with trackers. These panels, equipped with photovoltaic cells on the front and back, capture the sun's direct rays on one side, and capture the rays reflected on the ground thanks to the other side, thus optimising electricity production.
It will represent about 10% of electricity peak demand of the country and will reduce Qatar’s carbon dioxide emissions by 26-million tons during the life of the project.
Potential Job Creation
Not stated.
Capital Expenditure
The project is estimated at $500-million.
Planned Start/End Date
Power will be supplied to the grid from 2021, with an initial capacity of 350 MW, reaching its full capacity in 2022.
Latest Developments
The Al Kharsaah solar power plant has been inaugurated.
This marks the completion of the construction works and the startup of the plant, which is now connected to the national grid.
The plant integrates two-million high-efficiency bifacial modules mounted on single-axis trackers.
The project includes a 25-year power purchase agreement between Siraj 1 and the power grid operator Kahramaa.
Key Contracts and Suppliers
None stated.
