African countries get training through TIGER Capacity Building Facility:

TIGER Training of the Trainer course for Land Cover Mapping in Water Resources Management.

The Water Research Commission in collaboration with Cap-Net, South African National Space Agency,   Department of Water Affairs and the European Space Agency hosted a capacity building and training workshop on 18 – 22 November 2013 in Pretoria.   The training course was attended by 35 trainees (mainly aquatic scientists and practitioners) from various African countries.  The training was held at the WRC offices.
The objectives of the TIGER Capacity Building Facility training module was to provide trainers with knowledge on how to make best use of  the TIGER training toolkit for land cover mapping for water management.  “ Upon training on this tool participants should be able to use the material to deliver further training to remote sensing practitioners or water management professionals in their own regions” ,says Dr Chris Moseki , Research Manager at WRC.

The TCBF is responsible for setting up a capacity building and training programme in support of research being undertaken via the TIGER initiative. TCBF prepared a Training Kit as the first initiative of this capacity building programme. The objective of the training kit was to teach water professionals to use Earth Observationtechniques in selected fields such as  Data acquisition strategies and techniques; Water Quality monitoring (algorithms specific for inland water bodies);Flood mapping (optical and SAR-based methods); Vegetation monitoring and evapo-transpiration; Crop monitoring, irrigation and Land cover mapping. A series of Training of Trainers courses on each topic were conducted as a joint program by ESA, TIGER’s four centers and its partner institutions in collaboration with Cap-Net and its partner networks in Africa.
