AfDB launches extractive sector information centre
JOHANNESBURG (miningweekly.com) – The African Development Bank (AfDB) has launched its Kenya-based Information Center for the Extractive Sector, a platform that will focus on knowledge-based dialogue with the aim of promoting informed policies for the sector.
According to government estimates, extractives currently contributed just 1% to Kenya’s national income and less than 2% of export earnings; however, this contribution was set to grow significantly, with current estimates suggesting that the sector could grow to 10% of gross domestic product, the development finance institute said.
AfDB Eastern Africa Resource Centre director Gabriel Negatu pointed out that the opportunity to use the sector to accelerate national development and promote economic growth required careful planning at this critical stage.
“AfDB supports the Africa mining vision, which sets out how mining can be used to drive continental development. We believe that, as stakeholders, we have a special role to play in promoting knowledge sharing in Kenya, given our proven record as a trusted convener and facilitator of Africa’s sustainable development agenda.
“In order to assist all those who will be affected by extractive industries – citizens, civil society organisations, businesses, development partners and donors – the AfDB has set up the Information Center for the Extractive Sector,” he said.
The information centre is housed by the AfDB and supported by the United Nations Development Programme and the governments of Australia, Canada and the UK.
