ActionSA has called on President Cyril Ramaphosa to deploy the South African National Defence Force (SANDF) to Mozambique, with the mandate of the Southern African Development Community and the African Union, as extremists continue to attack sites in the northern Mozambique town of Palma.

At least one South African is believed to have died.

The party has also urged Ramaphosa to tighten security in South Africa’s border regions as it predicts a refugee and security crisis in the country.

“With South Africa’s porous borders and failures to manage our borders effectively, we cannot be assured that we will be able to keep ISIS out of South Africa and that training camps do not exist in the north of our country. The Mozambican government cannot handle this matter on its own and cannot protect its own citizens as well as South Africans in that country,” ActionSA said.

The party further urged Department of International Relations and Cooperation Minister Dr Naledi Pandor to schedule an urgent official visit to Maputo and begin the process of bilateral cooperation.

“Additionally, South Africa should be tabling a resolution at the United Nations to draw in international internal cooperation.

We cannot fail Mozambique in the same way that we failed Zimbabwe. We cannot afford another failed State on our borders,” the party said.
