Name and location
Abu Qir steam power project, Egypt.

Project description
The project involves the design, fabrication, delivery, installation and commissioning of two complete steam turbine-generator sets, with a nominal capacity of 650 MW each, including auxiliaries. The output of each generator will be connected to 21/500-kV generator transformers.

Five 500-kV bays of indoor gas-insulated switchyard will be designed, supplied and installed to connect the generator transformers and the switchyard. This will also include installation of protection, communication and control systems in the switchyard building.

The civil works for the project will comprise the construction of access roads, site preparation, piling and foundation works, buildings, structural steel, underground piping, the construction of cooling water intake and discharge structures, and the construction of a portable water system and a sewerage system. The objective of the project is to increase the generation capacity of the unified power system by about 4% in 2012, to meet the electricity demand on the system in the short to medium term.

Value
The project is estimated to cost $1,3-billion. The African Development Bank (AfDB) has approved a loan of $325-million for the project.

Duration
The project will be implemented over 53 months from July 2007. Completion is scheduled for November 2011.
