A1.7 Mℓ/d desalination plant is being built in the Cederberg municipality, in the Western Cape, and is set for commissioning in October, says Veolia Water Solutions & Technolo- gies South Africa engineering manager Cobus Olivier.

The municipality awarded the R17-million contract to the firm to design, build and commission the plant that will draw sea- water from boreholes drilled near the shore in Lamberts Bay.

“The boreholes will provide a relatively clean source of feed water to the pretreatment phase,” says Olivier.

“Pretreatment will involve the passing of seawater through several dual-media pressure filters, which remove particles and other material in preparation for treatment by reverse osmosis (RO) membranes. “During the RO phase, the salt water will be forced through semipermeable membranes, which retain salts and enable freshwater to permeate.”

“Once desalinated, the water will be stabilised with limestone and carbon dioxide (CO2) and fed into the town’s existing freshwater network,” says Olivier.

A tight budget requires Veolia to use and improve on standard plant designs to maintain a high design and build quality. To ensure significant energy savings and reduced CO2 emissions, the plant will be fitted with a modern energy-recovery system as part of the plant’s initial capital investment. Specifications also require that the plant accommodate a future upgrade to 5 Mℓ/d.

Veolia’s manufacturing subsidiary, Aquafab, in Spain, will supply the plant’s standard compact seawater desalination skids.

The Lamberts Bay contract builds on the success of six seawater desalination plants installed by Veolia since 2009 along the Cape coastline at Canon Rocks, Bushman’s river mouth, Knysna, Plettenberg Bay, Mossel Bay and Saldanha, concludes Olivier.
