The City of Tshwane has reported that 130 suspects have appeared in the Mamelodi Magistrate’s Court for public violence, theft and possession of stolen goods looted over the past few days as the country dealt with lawlessness following former President Jacob Zuma’s arrest.

In a statement Tshwane Mayor Randall Williams said the South African Police Service (SAPS) and the South African National Defence Force (SANDF) would remain in the city to maintain law and order

Government has had to deploy 25 000 members of the SANDF to support the SAPS to bring normality in the affected areas.

He commended law enforcement teams for working with the communities and stakeholders, adding that an intelligence operation had been launched to recover some stolen goods.

“This week has been incredibly difficult for us as a country. The volume of looting and criminality that took place in some parts of the country are scenes that should never be repeated. As the City of Tshwane, we would like to send out condolences to the families of those who lost their lives during this period,” Williams said.

He further encouraged residents to report suspects or groups in possession of stolen goods to 012 358 7095/7096.
