Western Australia

Western Australia is a state of Australia, occupying the entire western third of the Australian continent. The state capital is Perth, which is also Australia's fourth-largest city and home to the majority of Western Australia's population. Western Australia is the largest Australian state by area, covering about 2.6-million square kilometres, yet it has a relatively small population of around 2.8-million people, most of whom live in the south-western corner. The state's economy is heavily dominated by mining and resources extraction, making it one of the world's most important mineral provinces. Western Australia is a leading global producer of iron-ore, gold, nickel, lithium, alumina and liquefied natural gas, with vast deposits in regions such as the Pilbara, Goldfields-Esperance and the Mid West. The resources sector accounts for a substantial share of the state's gross domestic product and export revenue, underpinning its significance to the Australian economy. Major mining companies including BHP, Rio Tinto, Fortescue Metals Group and numerous junior explorers operate extensively across the state. The state government, based in Perth, plays an active role in regulating and promoting the resources industry. Western Australia was established as a separate colony in 1829 and became a state of the Commonwealth of Australia in 1901, with its economic development accelerating dramatically during the post-war mining boom.
