Transmission System Operator

A transmission system operator is an entity responsible for operating, maintaining and developing the high-voltage electricity transmission network that transports power from generation sources to distribution networks. The operator manages the flow of electricity across the grid, balancing supply and demand in real time to ensure system stability and reliability. Transmission system operators coordinate the dispatch of power from various generators, including renewable energy sources, conventional power stations and imports, to meet consumption patterns throughout the day. They monitor grid frequency, voltage levels and network constraints, making operational decisions to prevent blackouts and maintain power quality. In liberalised electricity markets, the transmission system operator is typically separated from generation and distribution functions to ensure non-discriminatory access to the grid for all market participants. The role includes planning network upgrades and expansions to accommodate new generation capacity and changing demand patterns. Transmission system operators work closely with energy regulators, distribution companies and neighbouring grid operators to coordinate cross-border electricity flows and maintain regional grid stability. In South Africa, the establishment of a separate transmission system operator has been a key reform objective, with the National Transmission Company South Africa created to assume these functions from the vertically integrated utility Eskom. The transmission system operator's performance is critical to enabling competition in electricity generation and facilitating the integration of renewable energy into the power system.
