Toyota South Africa Motors

Toyota South Africa Motors is the South African subsidiary of Japanese automotive manufacturer Toyota Motor Corporation, responsible for the assembly, distribution and marketing of Toyota vehicles in South Africa. The company is headquartered in Johannesburg and operates a major manufacturing facility in Prospecton, Durban, which produces vehicles for both the domestic market and export to other African countries and international markets. Toyota South Africa Motors assembles a range of passenger cars, light commercial vehicles and sport utility vehicles, with the Hilux bakkie and Corolla sedan among its core products. The Prospecton plant is one of Toyota's key production hubs outside Japan and has received significant investment in recent years to expand capacity and introduce new models. The company is a major employer in the South African automotive sector and plays a significant role in the country's manufacturing economy. Toyota South Africa Motors has been active in exploring alternative fuel technologies, including hydrogen fuel cell vehicles such as the Toyota Mirai, as part of broader decarbonisation and energy transition initiatives. The company works with government departments, research institutions and industry partners to advance hydrogen infrastructure and fuel cell adoption in South Africa. Toyota established its South African operations in 1961, initially as a distributor, and began local assembly in the 1960s, growing to become one of the country's leading automotive manufacturers.
