SMMEs

SMMEs (small, medium and micro enterprises) are businesses classified by their size, turnover and employee headcount, forming the backbone of most developing economies. In South Africa, the category is defined by the National Small Business Act and encompasses entities ranging from survivalist microenterprises to established medium-sized firms with up to 200 employees, depending on the sector. SMMEs play a critical role in job creation, economic diversification and poverty alleviation, particularly in countries where formal employment opportunities are limited. The sector spans all industries, from retail and services to manufacturing and agriculture, and is often targeted by government support programmes, preferential procurement policies and dedicated financing schemes. Despite their economic importance, SMMEs face persistent challenges including limited access to finance, regulatory burdens, skills shortages and competition from larger corporations. In South Africa, SMMEs account for a significant share of private-sector employment and are central to the government's economic transformation and black economic empowerment objectives. Development finance institutions, commercial banks and donor agencies offer tailored products such as microloans, business development services and incubation support to strengthen the sector. The resilience and growth of SMMEs are closely watched as indicators of broader economic health and inclusive development.
